Log in everywhere with the same account

The Dutch public broadcast organization (NPO) provides programs for TV, radio, as well as streaming services such as NPO Start, Plus and apps. In recent years, each editorial team has developed its own way for users to log in - where necessary. The ambition is to combine all these separate accounts into one login. This is more convenient for the user, but also more secure. In addition, you can receive tips and recommendations based on your viewing and listening behavior.

To get everyone in the organization on the same page, extensive conversation maps were created to get from concept to final design. We also used the usability lab to test user understanding and acceptance. Valuable responses for the team based on a hi-fidelity prototype. With the knowledge of privacy and security specialists, all the dots were put on the i.The site id.npo.nl has now been launched as a separate service and incorporated into more and more NPO site and apps. From top2000 to the NPO Luister-app.

Challenge: The Dutch public broadcast organization (NPO) faced the challenge of managing separate user logins across TV, radio, and streaming services and personal data spread across several editors, which made managing them time intensive.

Solution: To address this challenge, NPO aimed to consolidate all these separate accounts into a single login, enhancing user convenience and security while enabling personalized content recommendations based on user behavior.

Process: Extensive conversation maps and prototypes (in Protopie and InVision) were developed to guide the transition from concept to final design. Usability testing in the usability lab helped assess user understanding and acceptance, providing valuable insights. A high-fidelity prototype played a key role in this process.

Example of onboarding flow: Not just the happy-flow, but  particularly when something needs to be changed, the user should be well served. The top flow gives an impression of logging into a site while the bottom flow depicts recovering a password on a mobile device. With these kinds of maps on the wall, specialists and stakeholders were able to provide targeted feedback to move the design forward

Outcome: The result of this effort was the launch of id.npo.nl as a service, which has since been integrated into numerous NPO sites and apps, including top2000 and the NPO Luister-app. This consolidation simplifies user access across NPO's diverse media offerings.

For example, as a viewer you want to watch your favorite series and you are not waiting for a complicated way of logging in or registering. So if it has to happen, then as smoothly as possible please. And your data must remain secure. Especially at NPO
